Our restaurant, Rue de France in Fontainebleau

L’Axel is in the Seine-et-Marne region, 60 kilometres south-east of Paris. Just a few minutes’ walk from this restaurant in Rue de France, in the centre of the historic town of Fontainebleau, diners can visit the town’s iconic château and equally popular eponymous forest.

A prestigious town

Fontainebleau is a historic town, closely linked to the rise and fall of Napoleon, who described its château as “the true home of kings, a property for the ages”. Take a tour of the royal lodgings, then enjoy a leisurely postprandial stroll through the surrounding forest.

A region steeped in history

Just a few kilometres away, the Château de Vaux-Le-Vicomte is an unmissable 17th-century masterpiece. It is the result of the combined genius of the architect Louis Le Vau, the gardener André Le Nôtre and the painter and decorator Charles Le Brun. Built in 1661, this magnificent example of architectural and horticultural harmony was the envy of Louis XIV and inspired all of Europe.

Barbizon, one of France’s most beautiful villages, has long inspired artists, including many pre-Impressionist painters who formed the Barbizon School, led by Millet and Théodore Rousseau, along with writers such as Georges Sand and Musset. Follow in their footsteps on one of the local art-inspired trails.

In Milly-la-Forêt, admire Le Cyclop, by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely: a striking, massive work of art.

In Thomery, which borders the Fontainebleau forest, visit painter Rosa Bonheur’s studio in her Renaissance château.

Or stroll through the narrow streets of Moret-sur-Loing, inspired by Alfred Sisley, and visit the vantage point from which he painted his famous Le Pont de Moret, displayed in the Musée d'Orsay.
